Product details for Synology DiskStation DS419slim 4-bay NAS

If you're in need of a secure and efficient way to store your data, then Synology's DS419SLIM desktop NAS is an excellent choice. The desktop NAS device and is equipped with a Marvell ARMADA 385 2-core 1.33 GHz processor. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 512 MB of RAM. The following data storage arrays are available for this desktop NAS system: 0, 1, 10, 5, 6 and JBOD. JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") allows you to connect hard drives of various sizes to create a multi-drive storage system. Unlike RAID levels, you will not lose any storage capacity of the various drives you combine.

RAID 0 stores your data on multiple drives, which increases performance and speed as all work is split among the various drives rather than handled by just one. The drives should ideally have equal storage capacities and a minimum of two drives are required. This RAID level offers no fault tolerance and is therefore best suited for large volumes of high speed storage. When using RAID 1 your data will be mirrored from one drive to another so that if one fails you will not lose any information. This fault tolerance also means that your total drive storage capacity is halved due to duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. Using RAID 5 means your data is split among multiple hard drives — when one drive has an error the data is copied and distributed to the other drives. With this method you can retain the storage capacity of all your drives. It's the ideal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three drives. When using RAID 6 you get higher data security, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still function.
