Product details for QNAP TVS 1282 i3 8G 12-bay NAS

The TVS-1282-I3-8G desktop NAS from QNAP safely stores your data and files. Unlike the usual external hard drives, you can simultaneously connect all computers in your network to this NAS (network-attached storage) device. It offers you ample storage space and needs much less power than regular PCs. It is equipped with It has an Intel Core i3-6100 3.7 GHz processor. With this model's 8 GB of RAM several users can access its data at the same time. This desktop NAS system has the following data storage forms available: 0, 10, 6, 5 + hot spare, 5, 1 and JBOD. JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") allows you to connect hard drives of various sizes to create a multi-drive storage system. Unlike RAID levels, you will not lose any storage capacity of the various drives you combine.

When using RAID 0, hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work in parallel — this means a higher, faster performance as computer tasks are not handled by just one drive. However, there is no fault tolerance because data is not mirrored, which means this RAID level is better suited for high speed storage of large volumes of data. When using RAID 1 your data will be mirrored from one drive to another so that if one fails you will not lose any information. This fault tolerance also means that your total drive storage capacity is halved due to duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. Using RAID 5 means your data is split among multiple hard drives — when one drive has an error the data is copied and distributed to the other drives. With this method you can retain the storage capacity of all your drives. It's the ideal choice for larger NAS systems with more than three drives. When using RAID 6 you get higher data security, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still function.
