Product details for QNAP TS-1635-4G 16-bay NAS

The TS-1635-4G desktop NAS from QNAP efficiently stores your files and data. Different from normal external hard drives, the NAS (network-attached storage) device can be directly integrated into your network. This gives all computers connected to your network access to the device and data. It offers you sufficient storage space and uses far less power than regular PCs. The desktop NAS device has two 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ ports as well as two Gigabit Ethernet ports and is equipped with an ARM Cortex A15 processor. With this model's 4 GB of RAM several users can access its data at the same time. This desktop NAS system has the following data storage forms available: 0, JBOD, 10, 6, 5, 1 and 10 + hot spare. Using a JBOD architecture to create a multi-disk storage space means you can combine hard drives of random sizes and will not lose the storage capacity of any of them. This is not the case with RAID levels.

Using RAID 0 means your hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work parallely. This increases performance and speed as the work is split bewteen multiple drives, but there is no fault tolerance. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. RAID 5 stores your data on multiple drives, which gives you high data security. If a drive begins to fail, the data it holds will be recreated and distributed to the other drives allowing users to continue working uninterrupted. For larger NAS systems with more than three hard drives RAID 5 is the ideal choice to retain optimal data security and total drive storage capacity. RAID 6 offers you high data security and is still operational even if two hard drives in the system fail.
